Hunting license in Sweden:free theory test practice in English

To get a hunting license in Sweden, meaning a license to own a firearm for hunting, you must pass the Swedish hunting exam (jägarexamen). It has one theoretical test and three practical sub-tests, and the theory test must be passed before you can book any practical test. You take it in an app on your own phone or tablet, supervised by an approved examiner, and you can switch the whole test to English.

Prøveklar lets you practice with questions in Swedish, with an English translation of every question and an explanation in English after each answer. That way you learn the Swedish terms too, which helps because the official study material is only in Swedish. Start with a free test of 10 questions, no account needed. Prøveklar is an independent practice service and is not part of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket).

The theory test in short: questions, time and pass mark

The test is governed by the Swedish EPA regulation NFS 2015:10. Key facts from Naturvårdsverket:

  • 70 questions in 60 minutes.
  • Each question has four options, and only one is correct. Some questions have a picture.
  • You need at least 60 correct answers to pass.
  • The EPA may add up to three trial questions that do not count towards your result. You will not know which ones they are.
  • You take the test in the app Teoriprov för jägarexamen on your own phone or tablet with internet access.
  • No aids are allowed, for example course material.
  • After the test you see a preliminary result. The examiner must approve it.
  • You can take only one theory test per day.
02

Taking the jägarexamen in English

  • The test is available in Swedish and English. In the app you can switch the whole test to English. The audio playback is not available in English.
  • You may use an interpreter at your own expense. The interpreter must be approved in advance, so contact the organiser well before the test.
  • If you have, for example, dyslexia or ADHD, or find the language difficult, you can ask for extra time, sit the test on your own or use the audio function. Ask the examiner in good time.
  • Study material is only in Swedish, according to the Swedish EPA.

Use the “Demo” mode in the app to test your device and see how the test works before the real day.

03

Who needs the hunting exam, and is there an age limit?

Under chapter 4, section 4 of the Weapons Ordinance (2026:409), you need the hunting exam to get a permit to possess a firearm for hunting. The EPA can grant exemptions in individual cases, but not for handguns, and exemptions are granted very restrictively.

According to the Swedish Police, you must be 18 to hold a hunting firearm, although exceptions can be made in some cases.

A complete hunting exam consists of:

  • a theoretical test
  • a shotgun test
  • a basic rifle test
  • a large game rifle test

Which practical tests you need depends on the type of firearm you want a license for. A foreign hunting exam is not registered in the Swedish Hunter Registry and cannot be converted into a Swedish one.

04

How to get a hunting license in Sweden: booking, Hunter ID and fees

  • Register in the Hunter Registry (Jägarregistret) to get a personal Hunter ID, and show it to the examiner on the day. Without a Swedish personal identity number you create a profile there and log in with it when the test starts.
  • Book the test with an approved examiner. The Swedish Hunters' Association and the National Association of Hunters list test ranges, examiners and courses.
  • The theory test costs SEK 500, paid to the test range (section 32 NFS 2015:10).
  • Practical tests: shotgun SEK 400, basic rifle SEK 200, large game rifle SEK 200. Ammunition costs extra.

A course is not mandatory. You can prepare on your own, but the test is always taken under an approved examiner.

05

Topics in the test, from hunting laws to game handling

The test covers 16 subject areas listed in NFS 2015:10, and Swedish hunting laws are a big part of it. On Prøveklar they are grouped into eight categories:

  • Hunting and firearms legislation, hunting ethics
  • Firearms, ammunition, ballistics and firearm safety
  • Species identification and ecology
  • Wildlife management, wildlife damage and wildlife research
  • Wildlife care and nature conservation
  • Hunting methods and hunting dogs
  • Trapping of wild mammals and birds
  • Wounding, tracking injured game and handling harvested game

Laws change, and so do the test questions. Sweden has a new Weapons Act (2026:408) and Weapons Ordinance (2026:409), which replaced the old ones in 2026. The EPA advises you to follow current legislation alongside the study books.
