The speedboat licence theory test in short
According to Dansk Sejlunion's test requirements (September 2025):
- 31 multiple-choice questions online.
- 30 minutes to answer.
- You need at least 80% correct, which means no more than 6 mistakes.
- You take it at the test venue on your own laptop, tablet or smartphone while the censor supervises.
- The theory and practical tests are taken on the same day, and you must pass both.
Candidates with dyslexia can buy a dyslexia version of the test with extra time.
Who needs a speedboat licence, and what is the minimum age?
Under the Speedboat Order (no. 749/2020), the rule covers planing recreational craft with a hull length under 15 metres and an engine power as listed in the order's annex. It also covers planing boats under 4 metres with 19 kW or more (jet skis have their own rules). Such a boat may only be operated by a person who:
- is at least 16 years old, and
- holds a speedboat certificate.
You must carry the certificate when you sail and show it to the police or the Danish Maritime Authority on request.
Under Executive Order no. 1441 of 25 November 2025, section 5, you can take the test from age 15. If you have passed the theory and practical proficiency test (duelighedsprøve) or Yachtmaster 3rd or 1st grade, you already meet the requirements. Jet-ski licence holders only need to pass the practical test.
