The taxi theory test in short
- 35 questions in 60 minutes.
- You need 30 correct answers (85 per cent) to pass.
- The test is taken in Norwegian on a PC at a Statens vegvesen traffic station. You get the result right away.
- You must hold a category B driving licence before you can take the test.
- The test costs 460 NOK (prices from 1 February 2026). You pay again if you have to retake it.
- If you fail, you are told which topics you got wrong, but not which questions. Under the general rules for theory tests you must wait two weeks before a new attempt.
In Norwegian the test is called teoriprøven for drosje or drosjesjåføreksamen. You can apply for an adapted test if you have reading or writing difficulties, but an interpreter is not allowed.
Requirements for a taxi driver's permit (kjøreseddel)
Passing the theory test is only one of the requirements. According to the police and the Norwegian Commercial Transport Act (yrkestransportlova § 37 c), you must:
- be at least 20 years old (and under 75),
- have held a category B licence continuously for at least two years,
- submit a health certificate from a Norwegian doctor, not older than three months,
- have a good record of conduct (the police check this themselves – you do not need to attach a Norwegian police certificate),
- document professional competence, usually with the decision that you passed the theory test.
If you are a foreign citizen, the main rule is that you must have lived in Norway for at least four years. There are exceptions, for example for EU/EEA citizens with a police certificate from their home country. The permit is normally valid for 10 years.
Topics in the test
There is no official textbook and no compulsory course. Statens vegvesen publishes a topic list, and the questions on Prøveklar follow it:
- Taxi driver's permit, licence and inspections
- Taxi requirements, fares and receipts
- Alcohol, drugs, health and mandatory abstinence
- Traffic rules and road access
- Vehicle condition and driving in difficult conditions
- Securing passengers, children and luggage
- Accidents and first aid
- Service, lost property, phone use and working hours
Remember the rules from your category B licence too – general traffic rules, child restraints and first aid are part of the test.
Norwegian words you must know
The questions are in Norwegian, so learn the key words first:
- kjøreseddel – taxi driver's permit
- løyve – licence to run a taxi business
- taksameter – taximeter
- kvittering – receipt
- hittegods – lost property
- førstehjelp – first aid
- pliktmessig avhold – mandatory abstinence from alcohol and other intoxicants before and during duty
Read every question to the end. Small words like “ikke” (not), “alltid” (always) and “minst” (at least) change the answer.
