A boat license in Norway (båtførerbevis) is required if you were born in 1980 or later and want to operate a recreational boat that is longer than 8 meters or has an engine of more than 25 hp. To get it, you must pass the boating exam, båtførerprøven, at an approved test center. The exam is run by Norsk Test AS on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet).

The exam is available in Norwegian and English. Prøveklar lets you practice with questions in Norwegian, each with an English translation and an explanation in English, so you can learn the Norwegian terms as well. Båtførerprøven test: how the exam works

  • 50 questions in one hour, on a computer at an approved test center. The exam is marked automatically.
  • You need at least 80 percent correct, which means no more than 10 wrong answers.
  • The particularly important topics chapter has its own limit: more than two errors there means you fail, whatever your score in the rest of the exam.
  • Charts are handed out. You may use a calculator, a ruler or parallel ruler, a pencil/pen, a compass or divider and rough paper.
  • You choose Norwegian or English when you start the exam at the test center.
  • If you fail, you can retake the exam no earlier than 14 days later.

The four main subjects are general seamanship, acts and regulations, navigation and chart reading, and particularly important topics, with roughly the same number of questions each (source: Norwegian Maritime Authority).

Who needs a boat driving license in Norway?

  • Anyone born on or after 1 January 1980 who operates a boat with more than 25 hp or more than 8 meters long. People born before 1980 are exempt.
  • You can take the exam from the age of 14, but the license is issued when you turn 16.
  • The license lets you operate Norwegian recreational craft of up to 15 meters in Norwegian territory.
  • Boats capable of 50 knots or more also require a high-speed license.

A course is not mandatory, and you can take the exam as a private candidate. Abroad, the Norwegian license may not be enough, and you may need an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
