The Swedish citizenship test in short: format and 2026 results
- The test is in Swedish, on paper, with multiple-choice questions with four options, one of them correct (UHR).
- The first civics test was held on 15 August 2026. The pass mark was set at 28 of 40 points.
- 875 people took the test and about 80 per cent passed (UHR news).
- The next civics test is planned for April–May 2027. The date, test duration and number of questions have not yet been published.
- Your result is sent automatically to the Swedish Migration Agency.
The pass mark is set after each test has been held, so it may change. A Swedish language test will be introduced later. Under Ordinance 2026:451, UHR develops and runs the test and decides on results.
Who has to take the Sweden citizenship test?
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, the knowledge requirement applies to applicants aged 16 to 66. You can also show your knowledge in other ways, for example with pass grades from Swedish school. The test is an option for people who cannot show their knowledge with grades.
- The Migration Agency decides who may take the test.
- You can only register if you have received a referral letter (anvisningsbrev) from the Migration Agency.
The test is only one of the requirements. From 6 June 2026 you must also, as a main rule, have lived in Sweden for at least 8 years and be able to support yourself.
Registration, test day and fee
You register on UHR's website by creating an account with BankID or Freja eID. Without an e-ID you can use your personal identity number and the personal code in the Migration Agency's letter. Registration is currently closed; UHR will announce when it opens for the next test.
On test day you must show valid Swedish ID; an electronic ID is not accepted. You may bring a pencil or mechanical pencil, an eraser and simple earplugs. Dictionaries and interpreters are not on the list of permitted aids. If you need special support, for example because of dyslexia, ADHD or a visual impairment, you can apply for adaptations.
Fee: Under section 6 of the ordinance the test costs SEK 2,000. The fee applies for the first time to tests held in 2027. Stateless persons who have been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority do not pay. UHR says information on the registration fee will follow.
What the Swedish citizenship test questions cover
UHR has published an official study guide, Sverige i fokus (PDF and audio files in Swedish). The questions on Prøveklar follow it and are grouped into these topics:
- Sweden the country – geography, divisions, natural resources and climate
- Democracy, form of government and elections
- Fundamental laws and the justice system
- The media and human rights
- Labour market, personal finance and welfare
- Sweden's modern history
- Sweden and the world – Nordic cooperation, EU, UN and security policy
- Religion, traditions and holidays
Use the corrected version of the material (10 August 2026). Our questions follow that version.
Swedish words you should know
The questions are in Swedish, so learn the key words first:
- riksdag – the Swedish parliament
- regering – government
- kommun / region – municipality / region
- grundlag – fundamental (constitutional) law
- kollektivavtal – collective agreement
- allemansrätten – the right of public access to nature
- högtid – holiday, festival
Read every question to the end. Small words like “inte” (not), “alltid” (always) and “endast” (only) change the answer.
