Hygiene Passport test in Finland: format and pass mark

Key facts from the Finnish Food Authority and its regulation 18/2026:

  • 40 true/false statements. For each one you decide whether it is true or false.
  • You need at least 34 correct. No points are deducted for wrong answers, so you can get up to six wrong and still pass.
  • Blank or unclear answers count as incorrect.
  • You have 45 minutes. You may leave at the earliest 20 minutes after the start.
  • Answers are marked on a paper test form with a ballpoint pen of a colour other than black. Pencils are not allowed.
  • The test cannot be taken electronically, remotely, at home or abroad.

The test form is available in Finnish, Swedish or English. In a special-situation test the examiner may, for example, read the statements aloud, allow a dictionary or have the statements translated into another language on a separate sheet. The examiner must notify Ruokavirasto at least 7 days before such a test, so ask your examiner early.

Who needs a Hygiene Passport?

According to Ruokavirasto, you need a Hygiene Passport if you:

  • work on food premises, such as a café, restaurant, fast food restaurant, food store, institutional kitchen or bakery, and
  • handle unpackaged perishable foods, such as milk, meat, fish or chopped vegetables.

This also applies to employers, volunteers, students and trainees. You must have the passport once such work totals three months, and earlier periods of similar work are added up. The employer is responsible for making sure everyone who needs a passport has one.

You must show your employer the original passport, either the plastic card or the paper certificate. Copies, photos, the serial number or a diploma are not accepted, and according to Ruokavirasto a foreign hygiene passport does not prove hygiene proficiency in Finland either.

03

Registering, Hygiene Passport price and ID

  • Register directly with a Hygiene Passport Examiner approved by Ruokavirasto. The list of examiners is on the Hygiene Passport pages. Ruokavirasto itself does not organise tests.
  • Training before the test is not mandatory.
  • Bring an original, valid official photo ID, for example a passport, an identity card or a residence permit card issued by the Finnish Immigration Service. A foreign driving licence, a copy or an expired document is not accepted.
  • If you do not yet have a Finnish personal identity code, you write your full name and date of birth on the test form.
  • Phones and other electronic devices must not be visible during the test.

Price: Ruokavirasto does not set a price. Under section 19 of the Food Act the examiner may charge for the test and for the passports they issue, so prices vary. Check the price with your examiner.

Hygiene Passport test questions: what the topics are

Annex 1 of Ruokavirasto's regulation lists the areas you must know. The questions on Prøveklar follow them:

  • Basic microbiology and food contamination: microbes, what affects their growth, and perishable foods
  • Food poisoning and hygienic work practices: storage, heating, cooling and preventing recontamination
  • Personal hygiene: work clothing and hand hygiene
  • Cleaning and waste management
  • Own-check (omavalvonta, the business's self-monitoring)
  • Legislation and authorities

Ruokavirasto says the answer to a statement cannot always be found directly in the law. It may be based on good hygiene practice, so think about each statement from a food safety point of view. Ruokavirasto also publishes an official model test, but the questions in the real test vary.

Hygieniapassi in English: Finnish words worth knowing

Even if you take the test in English, your workplace will use Finnish. These words come up often:

  • hygieniapassi – Hygiene Passport
  • hygieniapassitestaaja – Hygiene Passport Examiner
  • elintarvikehuoneisto – food premises
  • helposti pilaantuva elintarvike – perishable food
  • omavalvonta – own-check (self-monitoring)
  • ristikontaminaatio – cross-contamination
  • oikein / väärin – true / false

Read every statement to the end. Small words like “aina” (always), “ei” (not) and “vähintään” (at least) change the answer.
